What does the badge mean?
Black and white shield with two seahorses and a castle, "Newcastle United FC" text. The castle is taken directly from the coat of arms of Newcastle upon Tyne — "Newcastle" literally means "new castle," referring to a fortress built by William the Conqueror's son in 1080. The two seahorses flanking the shield are also from the city's heraldry, representing Newcastle's history as a major port on the River Tyne. Black and white stripes have been worn since 1894.
