Southampton Badge History & Meaning

Founded 1885 "Play Up Saints"

What does the badge mean?

The halo references the club's founding by members of St Mary's Church Young Men's Association in 1885 — Southampton were originally known as St Mary's FC, and the halo is a direct nod to that religious origin. It's one of the most unusual and distinctive symbols in English football — no other Premier League club has a halo on their badge. Red and white stripes have been worn since the 1890s.
